Position Summary

Leads Capex management and capital planning for FRA (Flame Retardant Additives) BU in North America, which includes 4 manufacturing sites and a technical center.  This position will be responsible for the appropriate metrics, programs, procedures, and management systems to drive improved capital project execution.  Ensures Capex execution to plan on time, on schedule and in scope, in line with company and industry standards. Implements projects which result in improved process yield, higher capacity, improved operating efficiencies, recognizable cost savings, improved product quality, and new products.  Utilize process knowledge and expertise to contribute to plant operations and assist in process troubleshooting.  Identify and evaluate process improvements and new technologies.  

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage engineering staff at Fairmount and Bauxite sites.
  • Define and implement the regional Capex strategy in cooperation with the Global Engineering/Process technology Team FRA and the Site/Plant leaders
  • Develop and lead the regional engineering organization.
  • Ensure Capex execution based on regional Capex plan
  • Represent the U.S. FRA sites in authorization reviews
  • Work as a capital project leader and execute capital projects
  • Work in cross-functional teams to install new facilities or modify / expand existing facilities.  Work with Operations and Engineering to optimize new and existing processes (quality, yield, capacity, etc.).
  • Support implementation of MMSR’s (Minimum Mandatory Standards & Requirements) with potential to lead specific efforts as a SME (Subject Matter Expert).
  • Responsible for knowledge of the basics of the regulations and laws affecting assigned work areas and working to help ensure that all regulations and laws are followed.  
  • Responsible for bringing all EH&S incidents or concerns to management for resolution.
  • Create cost models, determine process capability, and plant capacity to aid Sales and Marketing in development of business cases.
  • Ensure development and training of the regional capital project leaders
  • Coordinate with manufacturing and other internal departments to define implementation strategy of capex projects along with business needs / production schedule
  • Lead the project controlling to ensure capital execution on time, budget and scope
  • Align the project execution processes across all sites.
  • Ensure capital project process quality and benchmarking
  • Lead negotiation together with sourcing to define suppliers.
  • Ensure development of technical specification for equipment, and other project related key documents according to project process description or standards in defined quality
  • Ensure development, regular review, and effectiveness of capex execution to plan
  • Assist Operations in quality improvements, cost reduction, and equipment utilization through statistical analysis and Six Sigma techniques.
  • Analyze and document plant processes and operating procedures.  Take part in training of plant operators.
  • Provide technical expertise relating to equipment operation and repair.
  • Implement and manage expense and capital projects.  Prepare project documentation, including feasibility reports, project estimates, scopes of work, EH&S reviews, and capital appropriations requests (CAR).
  • Process development activities to include creation / modification of process flow diagrams (PFD’s), piping & instrument diagrams (P&ID’s), equipment specifications, control logic, etc.
  • Work on cross-functional project teams during feasibility, design, construction, and commissioning phases of capital facilities to achieve business objectives.
  • Work with the FRA Technology department in support of customer technical service and new product development.  
  • Position may require up to 25% - 50% travel.

Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with a minimum of 5 years’ experience managing CAPEX teams in continuous or discrete manufacturing.  
  • Experience in the Mineral Processing or Chemical Process Industries is a plus.
  • Experience in evaluating existing and new processes, making recommendations based on these evaluations, and successfully implementing process improvements.
  • Strong communication and computer skills necessary.  Must be able to use Microsoft Office Suite including but not limited to word, excel, power point. 
  • Must work well without direct or constant supervision and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Previous supervisory experience a plus.
  • Experience in unit operations such as particle size reduction, classification, bulk material handling, pneumatic conveying, powder drying, and processing is a plus.
  • Six Sigma training and familiarity with statistical analysis software (Minitab) is a plus.
  • PLC programming knowledge is a plus.
