Position Summary
The Environment, Health, & Safety Director is responsible for developing, implementing and managing comprehensive environment, health and safety strategies and programs. This role will focus on cultivating a culture of EHS excellence, safety leadership, active risk reduction in the business unit and continuous compliance through support and alignment with BU General Managers, Operations and functional partners across HSM, HEM and JM Huber.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Partners with the organization's senior leadership to ensure alignment of the EHS functions to business objectives; creates organizational level strategies to support safety programs for employees and customers.
- Oversees a team of EHS professionals at plant locations, including delegation, optimal deployment of resources, and development of staff skills.
- Directs and administers specific functions of the EHS program for the global HSM business unit.
- Creates, evaluates, educates, and administers the EHS program deployment on projects.
- Insure current and future compliance with various regional and national regulations such as MSHA
- Conducts surveys, evaluations, inspections, and investigations of incidents and activities; communicates findings to appropriate entities within the organization. Insures sustainable action plans to avoid repeat incidents.
- Develops and effectively develops world class safety initiatives e.g. management systems, contractor safety, first line supervisor training, etc.
- Act as the HSM business Sustainability liaison to leverage the HEM and JMH Sustainability Strategic Workstream team for goal development and execution
- Drives innovation through our continuous process improvement and standardizing work practices in the EHS function across locations.
- Active participant on the HEM EHS&S and HSM Leadership Teams.
Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills
- 10+ years of experience in the EHS profession, specifically supporting multi-site manufacturing businesses, preferably in mining (MSHA requirements), chemical or related industry.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, CSP, CIH or PE designation preferred
- Demonstrated ability to manage environmental or safety programs by leveraging strong people and project management skills on a global scale.
- Demonstrated experience implementing environmental or safety management systems as well as developing and deploying effective training programs globally.
- Demonstrated experience leading cross functional teams and developing strategies to address operational resource efficiency and renewable energy opportunities.
- Proven ability to build support, share vision and drive action through excellent leadership, communication and influencing skills. Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality at all times.
- Willing to challenge and be challenged in order to effectively partner with all levels of the business (from front line operators to senior leadership) and external partners to achieve overall objectives. Able to build relationships at all levels of the organization through a genuine Care for Life.
- Demonstrated ability to critically analyze data to identify trends and translate results into action through innovative thinking.
- Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills in English
- Proven understanding and ability to administer the ISO 14001 and 45001 management systems
