Position Summary

The role will be for a strong individual contributor with high level of knowledge in microbial genetics, molecular biology, and microbial physiology. This role will require working in the laboratory, as well as providing strategic direction to projects relevant to new bacterial strain development.  Knowledge of microbiology and molecular biology techniques is essential.  Role will support and lead small scale fermentation trials and research project teams as required and will also support protection of intellectual property by assisting with patent applications and processing.


Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Individual contributor with high level of knowledge in microbiology, molecular biology, and microbial physiology.
  • Develops and applies knowledge and expertise to implement and/or improve tools, techniques and work processes
  • Solves problems and issues requiring a high level of technical knowledge and consideration of other disciplines
  • Creates, analyses, recommends new methods, techniques and/or processes
  • Proactively identifies problems and develops solutions
  • Serves on teams focused on highly complex or specialized strain development or microbiology projects
  • May manage small team and/or leads research project teams
  • Liaises with legal department on patents regarding strain development and fermentation
  • Writes/reviews definitive publications of significant scientific importance
  • Works in a safe manner in accordance with Huber principals
  • Works with others within a Process R&D and Innovation
  • Influences and/or convinces others within the organization to reach agreement and accept new practices and approaches


  • PhD / MS degree in Microbial Genetics, Molecular Biology or Microbial Physiology with 3-5 years of experience with PhD or 5+ years of experience with MS in biotechnology industry as related technical position.
  • Extensive knowledge and skills in microbial genetics, molecular biology and other related disciplines to work on complex research and strain development projects
  • Strong knowledge of microbiology and molecular biology techniques (sterile techniques, DNA and protein techniques, gene cloning and expression, mutagenesis and screening, bioinformatics etc.)
  • Demonstrates broad knowledge and experience with the ability to incorporate technology from related disciplines
  • Ability to solve a variety of issues by applying established and new procedures in field of microbial genetics and physiology
  • Recognized as a technical specialist in field of practical aspects of strain development
  • Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to writes/reviews publications of significant scientific importance
  • Assist patent attorneys with writing and processing of patent applications
  • Ability to work on problems of reasonable scope and may lead a small team or technical project
  • May develop, mentor and coach others
  • May travel to customer or vendor sites or other CPK facilities, if needed
  • Project management know how desirable
