Position Summary

Assist R&D and technical service managers in carrying out R&D and technical service, business development and new product development projects.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

•    Work under directions of R&D Scientist and Technical Service Manager on projects relating to R&D or Technical Service.
•    In accordance with SOPs, conducts laboratory scale polymer compounding and testing.  
•    In accordance with SOPs, conducts inorganic compound synthesis under the guidance of scientists.
•    Strong ability to use Microsoft Office Suite software especially Excel.
•    Performs customer technical support via lab testing, assisting in customer trials.  
•    Performs plant technical support via assisting in trials and raw materials change or qualification.
•    Familiar with FTIR, TGA/DSC, particle size and specific surface area measurements.  
•    Ability to work in a team environment across functional and regional boundaries with scientists, sales, regulatory, production and fellow technicians.  
•    Carries out product and process continuous improvement programs by optimization of product performance under the guidance of scientists.
•    Manages lab equipment and consumable supplies and inventory.
•    Ability to keep neat, accurate research laboratory notebook, and records lab or plant test results in a systematic, understandable manner.
•    Performs standard laboratory tests and application testing on new and existing flame retardants such as ATH, MDH, and others.
•    Conducts routine and non-routine tests of laboratory and production samples.
•    Sets up and operates a wide range of laboratory test equipment.
•    Works safely and maintains high housekeeping standards. Wears required safety equipment.
•    Trains others in the performance of standard laboratory procedures.
•    Applies product reliability practices or standards where applicable.
•    Assures high quality through good laboratory techniques and elementary statistical analysis.
•    Ability to differentiate between normal and abnormal experimental results.
•    Ability to develop and conduct non-standard materials testing.
•    Familiar with all lab instrument and equipment in use and basis basic maintenance.
•    Familiar with plant QC procedures and be able to run QC tests.
•    Prepares and carefully reviews figures, computations, tests, reports, etc., and ensures they have internal consistency; ensures that information can be understood by all who need to read it.
•    Accurately troubleshoots technical problems with equipment and applications and designs expedient solutions for internal and external customers.
•    Responsible for developing and recording laboratory procedures in a clear, data-driven manner.
•    Able to measure and demonstrate value of products on customer formulations.
•    Writes project reports summarizing lab testing and development work with recommendations.
May perform other duties as assigned.

Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills

•    Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Materials, Laboratory Science or related field 
•    Hands-on experience in polymer compounding and testing, including fire retardant testing.
•    5 years of related field/industry experience or combination of education and experience may be accepted.
•    Strong computer skills and must be proficient in Microsoft Office software 
•    Coordinates required sample analysis by 3rd party laboratories as needed.
•    Working knowledge of standard laboratory scale polymer compounding and testing equipment.  .
•    Verbally transmits ideas, instructions and information so they are clearly understood by others in formal or in-formal face-to-face situations.  
•    Must understand, read, write and speak the English language.
•    Respects deadlines and works to closure.
•    Writes clear, concise and grammatically correct memos, letters, reports and instructions which clearly state the intended message in a manner that is professional, yet easy for others to understand. 
•    Quickly & effectively adjusts behavior to meet a goal and/or changing circumstances, e.g., changed work schedules, customer needs, and strategic directions of the company.
•    Demonstrates a level of listening skill such that departmental needs, issues, problems, etc. are heard and possibly resolved.
