Position Summary

Provide general assistance in various craft skills required to construct, repair, and maintain plant equipment, utilities, buildings and related structures and train on various equipment and systems in plant.  Employs training and experience in the various craft skills required to complete simple assignments and to assist in the performance of more highly skilled tasks.  Sets up, adjusts, operates, and maintains shop tools (drill press and grinder). Occasionally operates electrode welder and oxygen and acetylene cutting and welding apparatus.  Operates and maintains portable power tools and standard hand tools. Occasionally operates fork trucks. Continuously trains to a high level of proficiency.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Helps maintain and repair mechanical equipment throughout the plant by assisting with the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment throughout the plant. Be able to use electrode welding and acetylene torch cutting (minor assignments). Ability to aalign chains and sprockets. Inspecting and replacing belts, chains, etc. Rebuilding valves, simple mechanical drives, and similar devices. Fabricating simple structures, braces, equipment, etc. from steel, sheet metal or wood. Knowledge of pipefitting: screwed, flanged, and glued pipe and fittings for air, water, hydraulic and steam systems. Rigging with chain falls, jacks, forklifts, cranes, scaffolds, etc. Painting: surface preparation through cleanup.
  1. Assists with PM (preventative maintenance) to plant mechanical equipment as specified and maintains daily work logs
  2. Manufactures simple parts or equipment as directed by MECHANICAL MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR Replaces guards, floor grates, etc., and removes all tools, parts, rags, etc. upon completion of assignment
  3. Follows checkout procedure when removing items from the storeroom.
  4. Demonstrates a familiarity of regulatory and company safety issues and safe working habits.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Specialized/Technical Knowledge/Education or Required Skills

High School Diploma or GED, good mechanical aptitude, ability to work with others as a team, and completion of industrial maintenance training required.

 Occasionally operates electrode welder, acetylene torch, portable power tools, shop equipment, forklift, and other mobile equipment. Must successfully pass the company’s forklift, aerial work platform, and mobile crane operator’s test.

Routinely uses testing devices and standard hand tools.

Physical Requirements

Works in all inside and outside areas of the plant and is often exposed to heat, cold, inclement weather, grease, oil, and dirty working conditions. Work is performed while walking and standing or climbing a considerable portion of the time, often in awkward or strained positions.

  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts, overtime and be on call as required.
  • Must be able to wear hearing protection and respirator required for task being performed.
  • Must have the ability to stoop, bend, kneel, and work in heights.
  • Must have the ability to operate heavy equipment such as man-lifts and portable cranes.
  • Must have ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
