Position Summary

We are looking for a driven, detail-oriented individual to join our Fire Retardant Additives R&D group located in Fairmount GA (just 30 miles north of Atlanta). As a Senior R&D Technician, you will work under the direction of a Senior Scientist. Following extensive on-the-job training you will independently complete designated tasks that contribute to new product development and technical service projects supporting Huber’s customers and domestic production facilities. This position has great opportunity for growth as you will learn new synthetic and spectroscopic techniques as well as flame retardancy formulation and testing. The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter with a chemistry background and an interest in scientific research, chemical engineering, and driving new product development to commercialization. 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

•    Work under the direction of a Senior Scientist on projects relating to new product development and customer technical service.
•    In accordance with SOPs, perform synthesis and characterization of inorganic materials and compounds. 
•    In accordance with SOPs, prepare, characterize, and perform fire retardancy testing of polymer compounds on laboratory scale. 
•    After extensive on-the-job training, independently operate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory equipment. 
•    Perform laboratory activities safely, including handling of chemicals in accordance with Huber and government policies and regulations. 
•    Maintain neat, accurate, and up-to-date laboratory notebooks and research documentation.
•    Prepare, review, and present technical reports and experimental findings.
•    Quickly learn new technologies, test methods, and procedures.
•    Consistently multitask and balance the needs of multiple projects simultaneously.
•    Provide on-site technical support to Huber customers and Huber US manufacturing facilities. 
•    Work within a cross-functional team of R&D, sales, regulatory, production, and marketing colleagues. 
•    Occasionally work in a non-climate-controlled environment exposed to heat, cold, and dust.
•    Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs.  
•    May perform other duties as assigned.

Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills

•    BS degree in Chemistry, Physics, Polymer/Materials Science or related field (preferred but not required).
•    Familiarity with infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis (TGA/DSC), rheology, elemental analysis, and particle characterization (preferred but not required).
•    Experience with polymer compounding and testing, including fire retardancy testing (preferred but not required).
•    0-5 years of industry experience – combination of education and experience may be accepted.
•    Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
•    Must have English language proficiency.
•    May include domestic travel up to 20%
