Position Summary
The Research Technician plays a vital role in supporting research and development initiatives by conducting experiments, analyzing chemical compounds, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols. This position involves preparing samples, operating advanced laboratory equipment, and maintaining precise and accurate records of experimental data.
Working closely with chemists and other scientists, the technician collaborates to troubleshoot challenges, optimize processes, and contribute to the development of innovative solutions. The role also requires strict compliance with quality control standards, safe handling of hazardous materials, and staying current with industry regulations to ensure efficient and compliant laboratory operations.
Success in this position depends on strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a solid understanding of chemical properties and laboratory practices.
Candidates typically hold a degree in Chemistry or possess equivalent hands-on experience in related roles. Familiarity with analytical techniques and instrumentation is highly valued. This is an entry level role based in Fairmount, GA and expected to be on-site.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Sample Preparation: Prepare and handle samples for testing, including measuring, mixing, and diluting substances in accordance with established protocols.
- Equipment Operation: Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments to ensure accurate and reliable performance.
- Experimental Execution: Conduct experiments following standardized procedures, carefully observing and documenting results.
- Data Analysis: Analyze experimental data using appropriate analytical methods or statistical tools to interpret findings and support conclusions.
- Quality Control: Apply and maintain quality control measures to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety guidelines when handling hazardous materials, including proper storage, usage, and disposal practices.
- Collaboration: Partner with scientists, researchers, and lab personnel to support projects, troubleshoot issues, and improve processes.
- Documentation: Maintain thorough and accurate records of experiments, methodologies, and results in alignment with laboratory and regulatory requirements.
- Continuous Learning: Stay current with emerging technologies, techniques, and industry regulations to enhance performance and support innovation.
Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science) or equivalent practical experience.
- Laboratory Experience: Hands-on experience working in a laboratory environment, supporting research, testing, or product development activities.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in analytical techniques and instrumentation such as HPLC, GC-MS, NMR, and spectroscopy. Familiarity with data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, MATLAB, or specialized laboratory software).
- Chemistry Knowledge: Solid understanding of organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry principles, as well as their application to product development and formulation.
- Safety & Compliance: Knowledge of laboratory safety practices, hazardous material handling, and regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, EPA, TSCA).
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to troubleshoot experimental or equipment-related issues and propose effective solutions in a fast-paced R&D setting.
- Communication Skills: Ability to clearly document research findings, prepare technical reports, and communicate results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Team Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively within cross-functional and interdisciplinary teams, including engineering, quality assurance, and commercial functions.
- Attention to Detail: High level of precision in experimental execution, data recording, and documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Technical Proficiency: Working knowledge of laboratory methods, equipment operation, and chemical calculations, with the ability to perform tasks under moderate supervision.
- Continuous Learning: Commitment to staying current with scientific advancements, emerging technologies, and evolving regulatory requirements.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a laboratory environment for extended periods, including standing, walking, and moving between workstations.
- Capability to perform repetitive tasks such as pipetting, measuring, and handling small samples with precision.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment up to approximately 25–30 pounds.
- Manual dexterity required to operate laboratory instruments, handle delicate equipment, and perform fine motor tasks.
- Visual acuity sufficient to read instrument displays, observe experiments, and analyze data.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including lab coats, gloves, safety glasses, and respirators as needed.
- Comfortable working with and around chemicals, including hazardous materials, in compliance with safety protocols.
- Ability to work in environments that may involve exposure to varying temperatures, noise levels, or odors typical of laboratory settings.
- Capability to follow safety procedures and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
