Position Summary
The Mill Utility Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient feeding of rock into the processing plant and for loading customer trucks. This position requires the ability to learn all aspects of the milling process and provide coverage for Mill Operators as needed. The Mill Utility Operator will also assist the maintenance team with various tasks and projects.
The employee is responsible for maintaining compliance with Huber's Sustainability Management System within their area of responsibility. This includes adherence to all applicable environmental, health, safety, and regulatory requirements, which may include air permits, wastewater permits, stormwater permits, and other applicable regulations communicated to the employee.
Must be available to work overtime as needed, rotate days and nights and weekends.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Safely load customer trucks in accordance with company procedures and customer requirements.
- Perform Shipping Operator duties as needed, including completing shipping documentation, loading trucks, and receiving materials.
- Conduct preventive maintenance activities on the plant feed system, including cleaning the hopper using powered tools such as electric chisels and jackhammers. Complete and document pre-shift inspections and preventive maintenance on loaders, including lubrication, fueling, and monitoring fluid levels. Perform additional PM tasks as assigned.
- Operate a front-end loader to maintain a consistent supply of material to all milling systems, optimize tank levels, and support mill brightness and quality specifications.
- Complete daily production and operational paperwork and assist with inventory management and reporting as needed.
- Support the Shipping Department by assisting with the maintenance and upkeep of truck scales to ensure accurate weighing and measurement.
- Assist Mill Operators, Packaging Operators, and Maintenance personnel as needed to support safe and efficient plant operations.
- Maintain housekeeping standards throughout each shift, including keeping the rock hopper, feed belts, milling areas, and yard clean and organized. Use the loader to clean up minor spills and maintain proper grading of roads and yard areas.
- Monitor product quality through feedback from the Quality Department and make blend adjustments as necessary to maintain established quality standards.
- Demonstrate effective teamwork and communication skills while working collaboratively with all departments.
- Develop proficiency in operating all process systems to provide coverage for Mill Operators during emergencies, unplanned absences, vacations, or other staffing needs.
- Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to operational excellence efforts.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned and trained.
Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED required; technical school or vocational training preferred.
- Minimum of three years of experience operating industrial equipment and/or heavy machinery.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and understand equipment operation.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and the ability to consistently follow safety procedures and policies.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, multiplication, and percentages, using a calculator or manual methods.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow safety policies, standard operating procedures, Safety Data Sheets, production schedules, and operational reports.
Physical Requirements
- Work is performed primarily indoors with occasional outdoor duties.
- Regular exposure to varying environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures ranging from approximately 20°F to 120°F, as well as dust, dirt, noise, vibration, and humidity during shifts that may last 8 to 12 hours.
- Ability to safely lift, carry, and handle materials weighing up to 55 pounds on a repetitive basis throughout the workday.
- Frequent use of arms, hands, and fingers to lift, grasp, handle, and move materials and equipment.
- Ability to routinely perform physical activities including bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and reaching.
- Ability to safely climb and descend stairways, including up to 19 stairs multiple times throughout the shift.
- Must be able to wear all required PPE for the duration of the shift, including but not limited to hard hats, steel-toed footwear, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and fall protection equipment.
- Ability to repeatedly climb on and off mobile equipment, including forklifts, front-end loaders, and skid steers.
- Must be capable of performing physically demanding housekeeping tasks, including shoveling up to 2,000 pounds of loose rock as needed throughout the shift.
