Position Summary
The Mine Utility Operator I is a versatile role responsible for operating multiple types of mining equipment and providing critical support to both production and development activities. This position performs a variety of auxiliary tasks that enhance overall mine performance and improve operational efficiency.
The employee is responsible for maintaining compliance with Huber Sustainability Management System requirements within their area of responsibility. This includes, as applicable, adherence to environmental and regulatory standards such as air permits, wastewater permits, stormwater permits, and other site-specific compliance obligations.
Must be available to work night shift (9p - 6a:30a) and overtime as needed.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
The Mine Utility Operator I must demonstrate competence in the safe and efficient operation of a variety of mining equipment and in supporting overall site operations. Key responsibilities include:
- Equipment Operation:
Operate haul trucks in and out of the underground mine to meet production targets. Safely and efficiently operate a 6-yard front-end loader for underground truck loading and surface crusher feed. Utilize ancillary equipment such as hydraulic excavators, breaker hammers, water trucks, skid steers, backhoes, telehandlers (lull), and rock breakers as needed. - Crusher System Support:
Perform crusher system operation support, including inspections and cleanup activities. Participation in Smoke School and certification is preferred. - Cross-Training and Versatility:
Cross-train on additional mining equipment, which may include track and फेस drills and scalers, to support operational flexibility. - Safety and Compliance:
Operate all equipment in a safe and prudent manner based on site conditions while maintaining production efficiency. Conduct workplace examinations and pre-operational inspections of mobile equipment at the start of each shift. Report safety concerns and maintenance issues to Mine Mechanics and/or Supervisors. - Maintenance Support:
Perform minor equipment repairs and assist in identifying maintenance needs to minimize downtime. - Communication and Continuous Improvement:
Identify and communicate hazards, operational deficiencies, and improvement opportunities to leadership. Participate in problem-solving efforts to enhance efficiency and productivity. Actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. - Team Support and Training:
Assist in training new employees and support team development efforts. - Housekeeping and General Duties:
Maintain daily housekeeping standards and perform other duties as assigned based on training and operational needs.
Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training is a plus.
- One to three years of experience as an equipment operator preferred.
- Previous underground mining experience strongly preferred.
- Basic computer skills required, including the ability to access email, use company systems, and complete required online training.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and support minor equipment issues.
- Demonstrated commitment to working safely and following all safety protocols.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, multiplication, and percentages (with or without a calculator).
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to interact with employees at all levels and communicate clearly via radio.
- Ability to read and understand safety manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety data sheets (SDS), and production schedules/reports.
- Willingness to participate in the Mine Rescue Team is considered a plus, but not required.
Physical Requirements
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in both underground and surface mining environments; prior underground experience is preferred.
- Regular exposure to challenging conditions, including extreme temperatures (heat and cold), low-light/dark environments, high noise levels, dust, fumes, vibration, grease, oil, and proximity to moving equipment.
- Operate heavy equipment on uneven, rough terrain in confined underground spaces, with frequent exposure to full-body vibration.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to climb on and off equipment (e.g., loaders, skid steers, forklifts) multiple times per shift.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs routinely.
- Capable of climbing ladders and stairs and occasionally working from elevated platforms.
- Ability to walk long distances, including uphill or downhill terrain, particularly in emergency situations.
Safety and PPE Requirements:
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) for the duration of the shift, including hard hat, safety-toed boots, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and fall protection (harness/lanyard), as applicable. Respiratory protection may be required based on conditions.
- Must be capable of properly donning a self-rescuer in emergency situations and assisting others if needed.
