Position Summary
The Mobile Equipment Mechanic performs highly skilled mechanical and electrical maintenance duties to repair and maintain vehicles, compressors, generators, and other mobile equipment essential to the mining, crushing, and grinding of limestone. This role ensures that all equipment, tools, and work areas are maintained in compliance with MSHA standards.
The position requires a working knowledge of applicable regulations and laws affecting assigned work areas, with responsibility for ensuring full compliance. The employee is also responsible for supporting and maintaining compliance with Huber’s Sustainability Management System within their area of influence. This may include adherence to air permits, wastewater permits, stormwater permits, and other regulatory requirements as applicable.
This position is scheduled Monday through Friday, 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and requires the ability to work overtime and weekends as needed.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs highly skilled mechanical and electrical maintenance duties, including but not limited to:
- Engine repair and diagnostics
- Transmission repair and diagnostics
- Ignition system repair and diagnostics
- Hydraulic and pneumatic system repairs
- Vehicle electrical system troubleshooting and repair
- Brake overhauls
- Engine tune-ups
- Exhaust system repairs
- Hose and belt replacement
- Preventative maintenance and repair of air compressors
- Light welding, brazing, and acetylene cutting
- Performs general support tasks, including but not limited to:
- Servicing vehicles
- Changing tires
- Cleaning vehicles
- Operates a variety of mobile equipment as required.
- Utilizes and maintains tools and equipment, including machine tools, portable power tools, hand tools, electrode welders, and oxygen/acetylene cutting and welding equipment.
- Maintains accurate records of hours and preventative maintenance for all mobile equipment.
- Fabricates, repairs, and maintains mechanical equipment, including crushers, conveyors, and associated systems.
- Actively participates in continuous improvement initiatives.
- Completes required documentation to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Maintains a clean and organized work environment, both at job sites and in the shop.
- Communicates repair issues and recommends solutions to the Maintenance Manager.
- Reports all Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) incidents or concerns to management for resolution.
- Performs other duties as assigned and trained.
Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED required; 1–2 years of technical school training preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working with diesel equipment preferred, or an equivalent combination of technical education and practical work experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to working safely and promoting a safe work environment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with working knowledge of electrical systems and equipment.
- Ability to recognize, react to, and respond appropriately to safety-related situations.
- Basic mathematical skills, including addition, multiplication, and percentages (calculator or manual methods acceptable).
- Effective communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to read and comprehend safety manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety data sheets (SDS), blueprints, and maintenance manuals.
- Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to use email and complete required online training.
Physical Requirements
- Works in both indoor and outdoor areas of the plant, including underground mining environments.
- Routinely exposed to harsh conditions, including extreme heat and cold, rain, snow, dust, dirt, stone spillage, noise, vibration, electricity, and humidity.
- Frequently climbs ladders to inspect and service equipment.
- Occasionally works in confined spaces.
- Regularly exposed to elevated and hard-to-access work areas.
- Must be able to routinely lift and handle 50+ pounds, and heavier weights with assistance.
- Requires regular use of arms, hands, and fingers to lift, handle, and manipulate tools and parts.
- Frequently performs physical activities such as stooping, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and crawling.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) for the duration of the shift, including a hard hat, steel-toed boots, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and fall protection equipment (harness/lanyard).
