Position Summary
The Plant Maintenance Mechanic performs skilled maintenance, repair, and work on plant equipment, buildings, and related structures to support safe and reliable operations. This role is responsible for maintaining equipment, tools, and work areas in compliance with applicable Mine Safety and Health Administration standards and other relevant regulations. The employee must understand and follow applicable laws, regulations, and safety requirements within their assigned work areas. Additionally, the role is responsible for supporting compliance with Huber’s Sustainability Management System, including applicable environmental requirements related to air emissions, wastewater, stormwater, and other permits or regulations within their assigned scope of responsibility.
Position is a rotation night shift hours.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform skilled maintenance, repair, fabrication, and installation of plant equipment and systems, including but not limited to:
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of production, packaging, and shipping equipment.
- Apply various welding, cutting, and brazing techniques.
- Perform measurement, layout, and fabrication tasks.
- Install gear reducers and diagnose and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, and HVAC systems.
- Install V-belts and timing belts, align sheaves, and ensure proper belt tension.
- Fabricate and install equipment guards in accordance with MSHA requirements.
- Demonstrate a general understanding of the operation, repair, and preventive maintenance of blowers, fans, gear reducers, pumps, screw conveyors, belt conveyors, elevators, airlocks, and dust collectors.
- Safely operate tools and equipment used to fabricate, install, repair, and modify plant equipment, including drill presses, hand drills, bench and hand grinders, gas torches, magnetic drills, band saws, hand saws, masonry drills and saws, portable band saws, air hammers, air chisels, pipe cutters and threaders, hole dies, wrenches, pliers, and rigging equipment such as chains, cables, and lifting straps.
- Use precision measuring, diagnostic, and testing instruments, including micrometers, calipers, levels, tape measures, pyrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, compression testers, digital tachometers, multimeters, and thermal analysis equipment.
- Perform general masonry and carpentry work as needed to maintain plant facilities and related structures.
- Install and maintain air, water, and powder-process piping and tubing.
- Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety, equipment reliability, quality, and operational efficiency.
- Complete required maintenance records and documentation to support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Maintain good housekeeping practices in the work area and maintenance shop to promote a safe, clean, and organized environment.
- Communicate maintenance issues, repair challenges, and equipment concerns to the Maintenance Manager and recommend solutions to improve equipment performance and reliability.
- Promptly report all environmental, health, and safety incidents, hazards, and concerns to management and support appropriate corrective actions.
- Perform other duties as trained and assigned to support plant operations and maintenance requirements.
Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED required; one to two years of technical school or vocational training preferred.
- Minimum of one to two years of general maintenance experience or equivalent technical school training.
- Demonstrate a commitment to safe work practices and the ability to recognize, respond to, and appropriately address safety-related situations.
- Demonstrate proven mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment-related issues.
- Perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, multiplication, and percentages, using a calculator or manual methods.
- Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Read, understand, and apply information contained in safety policy manuals, standard operating procedures, safety data sheets, blueprints, and maintenance manuals.
- Possess basic computer skills, including the ability to access email and complete required online training courses.
Physical Requirements
The Plant Maintenance Mechanic position requires the ability to perform physically demanding maintenance tasks in both indoor and outdoor plant environments and underground mine areas. Essential physical requirements include:
- Routinely lift, carry, push, and pull materials, tools, and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, squat, crawl, twist, climb ladders, and work in elevated or hard-to-reach areas.
- Use hands, fingers, arms, and upper body to grasp, handle, manipulate, and operate tools, equipment, and mechanical components with strength, coordination, and dexterity.
- Maintain balance and coordination while working on uneven surfaces, around operating equipment, and at heights.
- Perform repetitive physical movements and work in various positions for extended periods.
- Have the ability to see, hear, and communicate effectively to safely perform maintenance duties and recognize potential hazards.
- Work in environments with exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, dirt, noise, vibration, humidity, and other industrial conditions.
- Wear required personal protective equipment throughout the work shift, including hard hats, safety footwear, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and fall-protection equipment, as applicable.
