Position Summary
The Mechanic Apprentice is responsible for supporting and learning how to troubleshoot and repair mechanical equipment throughout the site and working with mentors to learn the mechanic apprentice position. This position requires a high level of self-management, punctuality, good attendance, and the ability to adjust to a variety of assignments. The application process for this position will also require all applicants to schedule and take applied math and graphic literacy administered by Green Country Technology Center (GCTC), as well as complete an interview and a mechanic assessment.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Support and learn how to repair, replace and install equipment including pumps, screw conveyors, rotary valves, relief valves, motors, conveyors, and its auxiliaries like pipes, flanges, gaskets, mechanical seals, filters.
- Support and learn how to align, disassemble and rebuild production equipment such as reciprocating compressors, steam turbines, bearing members, gearboxes and pumps.
- Utilization of micrometers and calipers to repair equipment; operation of drill press, hydraulic press, pedestal grinder, mill equipment and lathes.
- Work with mentors to install, repair and replace equipment, including pumps, valves, motors, and other process equipment.
- Uses a variety of handheld tools which must be grasped manually, applying as much as 100 pounds of torque to disassemble mechanical units. Tools may be manual, electrical or pneumatic in nature, requiring adequate grip for safe operation.
- Walk/Stand upon a variety of surfaces to transport materials, equipment and tools between work areas. Required to stand approximately 5-6 hours per day. Standing/walking takes place upon concrete, asphalt, metal grated and diamond steel plated walkways and stairways. Required to climb as high as 5 flights of stairs 3-4 times a day to reach work area. Must be able to kneel, crouch, or crawl to reach restricted access work areas a minimum of 1-2 times daily.
- Work in varying environmental conditions. Required to work primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions. Outside temperatures may range from -32oF to an excess of 100oF. Indoor temperatures can be 110oF or higher.
