Position Summary

The Safety Specialist will assist the Safety Manager with tasks related to regulatory compliance, current systems maintenance, as well as advancement of proactive plant initiatives and systems improvements. You will have the opportunity to identify and implement process improvements which result in higher throughput, improved efficiencies, recognizable cost savings and more consistent product quality. This role is an integral part of the plant and important to maintaining our overall values of CP Kelco and the J.M Huber family.

What you will be working on

  • Maintains and monitors various internal systems and procedures utilized for safety/health regulatory compliance. Recommend and implement changes as necessary under direction of Safety Manager.
  • Gather monthly information for analysis of key safety metrics. Identify trends and areas of concern or improvement.
  • Participates in monthly  departmental progress meetings as well as monthly technical review meetings.
  • Assists with upkeep and maintenance of EHS&S files and databases.
  • Actively participates on or leads at least one plant safety team.
  • Schedule, profile, and track waste disposal activities for industrial waste and universal wastes. Assist Environmental Manager with zero waste to landfill initiative.
  • Updates regulatory calendar with pertinent audit trail information.
  • Conducts internal safety audits and inspections with associated recordkeeping. Coordinates corrective actions as necessary.
  • Assists with inspections (scheduled and unscheduled) by regulatory agencies and subsequent inspection closure requirements.
  • Oversees or assists with third party contractors and consultants as they relate to EHS activities.
  • Assists with EHS budget expense monitoring and monthly explanations.
  • Participates in quarterly life safety audits.
  • Periodically participates in PSM review meetings as EHS representative.
  • Assists Environmental Manager as well as Safety & Health Manager with various EHS&S continuous improvement initiatives or corrections as needed.
  • Performs safety training as required • Assumes a leading role in annual shutdown safety programs & monitoring
  • Assist Safety Manager with accident/incident investigations and management
  • Develop strong working relationships with embedded and non-embedded contractors
  • Gathers or assists with contractor/subcontractor pre-qualification materials for analysis
  • Oversees and processes site chemical approval requests
  • Assists with HSMS requirements and tasks
  • Assists with Incident investigations including required documentation and database updates
  • Maintains or assists with EHS&S files and databases


Your knowledge and skills

  • Familiar with EPA, OSHA, and DOT regulations as applicable to industrial facilities.
  • Familiar with incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Experience with maintaining EHS management systems.
  • Experience with internal auditing/corrective action development in regards to safety.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint,)


Who you are

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Safety, or related field.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in a Safety role in an industrial setting.
  • HAZWOPER training a plus.
  • Safety related certifications (ASP, CSP, etc) a plus. 
  • Must be willing to obtain certifications as necessary during employment.
