Position Summary
The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for leading all environmental, health, safety, industrial hygiene, and regulatory compliance programs for Quincy, FL and Climax, GA Attapulgite Operations. The role provides oversight of MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) compliance, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), environmental permitting (air, stormwater, and wastewater compliance programs), industrial hygiene monitoring, training programs, DOT programs, contractor safety, emergency preparedness, Federal, State, local and internal regulatory reporting. The position works closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, geology, contractors, purchasing, and corporate EHS leadership to identify and manage risk, support business growth, and ensure compliance obligations are met across the Attapulgite business unit.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Collaboration & Engagement
- Influences site leaders and employees through visible leadership and effective communication
- Drives a culture focused on accountability, employee engagement, risk reduction, and environmental stewardship
- Works closely with cross-functional teams, including operations, maintenance, and management, to integrate EHS principles into daily operations
- Collaborates with other site EHS Specialists and the Regional EHS Director to align site-specific initiatives with overall organizational goals
- Reviews EHS dashboards, incidents, and action items with site leadership and employees to identify trends and areas to improve and drive change
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and engineering to understand plant and mining processes, as well as equipment operation
- Build relationships and rapport with site employees and leadership through engagement, follow-through, and consistent communication
- Safety and Environmental Compliance
- Implements and evaluates corporate EHS programs, policies, and procedures
- Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal environmental, health, and safety regulations
- Audits the organization’s facilities, equipment, procedures, training, and recordkeeping to identify areas of improvement
- Participates in agency regulatory inspections and/or responds to agency correspondence
- Adheres to all QMS procedures and documentation as applicable to position and department, and as required by ISO
- Collaborate with regulatory agencies and third-party organizations to maintain a thorough understanding of applicable regulations
- Performs industrial hygiene and environmental sampling and monitoring to ensure compliance with governmental regulations and best practices for both safety and environmental regulations.
- Collects and analyzes samples for employee exposure monitoring and environmental compliance
- Implements compliance tasks; maintains tracking of actions and compliance responsibilities
- Facilitate and participate in the Change Management process and review operational and capital improvement projects for environmental permitting, safety impacts, and regulatory requirements
- Assist with oversight of the DOT program and driver safety management
- Monitor lost-time injuries/illnesses and assist with Worker's Compensation Claims
- Incident Response and Investigation
- Works with leadership to conduct accident investigations; determine root causes and recommends corrective actions
- Develops and implements corrective and preventative action plans for audits, incidents, governmental non-compliance, and any other necessary items that should be tracked for completion and effectiveness
- Training and Education
- Oversee EHS training programs and conduct EHS training for all employees
- Ensure compliance with MSHA Part 46 and other required regulatory training programs for employees, visitors, and contractors
- Conducts or coordinates engaging safety meetings for employees on all shifts on a regular basis to share best practices, review incidents, and inform employees of safe work practices and environmental stewardship
- Stays informed about industry best practices and emerging trends to continually enhance training programs and compliance of the site
- Other duties and projects as assigned
Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills
- Associate degree in related field preferred
- 3 years of relevant experience, preferably in mining/manufacturing
- Working knowledge of MSHA standards and DOT
- Familiarity with reference standards (ACGIH / ANSI / NIOSH / NFPA / NEC / OSHA)
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to build relationships and facilitate learning
- Public speaking and strong communication skills
- Must have good comprehension of management systems and risk-based prioritization
- Proficiency with computer applications and Microsoft products
- Valid driver’s license required
- EHS certifications helpful (CSP, CMSP, ASP, OHST, MSHA Instructor, 30-hour OSHA General Industry, Visual Emissions Evaluator)
Physical Requirements
Work is split between an office setting, production environment, and field locations. Limited domestic travel may be required, approximately 20%. Able to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop and climb up to 70 feet. Able to lift, pull, push and carry up to 25 lbs. Manual dexterity required for operation of a computer keyboard. Respirator Fit Test is required at hire; no facial hair can interfere with the seal of the respirator at pre-hire and annual fit test screening. Vision and hearing tests are also required.
