Position Summary

The successful candidate for this position will manage all field trials for Miller Chemical and serve as the agronomic resource for the commercial team. The person will be responsible for developing key product attributes , analyze data and present data summaries. In this role, the candidate will work closely with formulation scientists, sales, marketing and customers. They will have to understand and address the needs of the business, including field biology work for new product development. The person will be responsible for managing all external relationships for research trials with universities and independent research companies. The Senior Field Biologist will report directly to Director of Product Technology. 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops an understanding of competitors and key competitive technologies. Uses knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of competitive products to identify opportunities for competitive product positioning
  • Serves as technical agronomic support resource for sales team to resolve customer product and crop concerns
  • Field Trials
    • Develops hypotheses, plans and executes effective experiments, generates reproducible data, interprets results, and modifies hypotheses appropriately.
    • Ensures field trial objectives are clearly defined and aligned with business and market needs
    • Captures the needs of the sales team (globally) and prioritization of all trials and demos for the organization.
    • Coordinates field research trials and design test protocols to evaluate and determine performance for all existing products and new product concepts vs competition
    • Identify opportunities for internal greenhouse development for trials
  • Develops key performance attributes for all products and rate them
  • Drives writing product labels and updating existing labels as necessary working collaboratively with formulations, regulatory and marketing
  • Manages the budget for field biology research
  • Participates on the New Product Development team and represents field biology
  • Proactively communicates with Miller Chemical leadership regarding opportunities, obstacles and needs identified in the product development process

Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills

  • Possess extensive knowledge of crop production and cultural practices
  • PhD degree in Crop Science, Agronomy or equivalent with 3-5 years of experience in specialty agricultural product development
  • Ability to work independently and drive projects to completion.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Ability to successfully partner with team members and stakeholders (sales, marketing, R&D, regulatory, etc.) from multiple backgrounds.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to clearly articulate the value of Miller’s technology when talking with customers (both internally and externally).
  • Excellent experimental design and data analysis skills
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word and Power Point is a must
