Position Summary

In this role you will work under the direction of Production Manager, and be responsible for directing the shift team activities in the San Diego Plant.  You will be responsible for assisting in meeting all of the site’s goals including:  volume, quality, cost, safety, environmental, cGMP, training, and personnel.  You will supervise and coach the activity of production shift teams including up to 30 operators per shift in fermentation, recovery, cogen, utilities and mill room areas.  As a Supervisor you will also have contributory responsibilities for payroll, raw materials, and supplies. Additional responsibilities include site security, emergency situations and implementing and supporting the environmental, health, safety, and security (EHS&S) management system and the J.M. Huber Corporation EH&S Policy.

What you will be working on

As a Production Supervisor you will work an alternating rotating schedule consisting of days one week and nights the next week. This does require flexibility to work on the weekend. However, the benefit is some weeks you are off 4 days and some weeks you are off 3 days. 

In this role you will be responsible for the following during your shift:

  • Consistently have awareness of potential safety and environmental concerns. Researches subjects of interest, and develops safety meetings based on those topics. Participates in safety and environmental programs and demonstrates an unimpeachable example in compliance to them. Consistently works to ensure department-wide compliance with all EHS&S programs. You will have oversight over lock out, tag out and permits.
  • Ensure all fermentors and seeds are filled and inoculated to meet production needs.  Ensure recovery lines are maintained at plan rates and on-stream times. Ensure planned product is packed and properly prepared for shipping. Coordinate maintenance activities to ensure plant priorities are being met. Ensure all procedures are being followed. Train, develop, and motivate employees. Assist department manager with additional tasks as assigned.
  • Ensure that all personnel have the proper tools including communication that are needed to perform their jobs. Clearly and consistently upholds work standards for the people being supervised. Provides guidance as to the quality and quantity of work that employees are expected to maintain – this includes adherence to SOP’s, cGMP compliance, safety guideline assignments are clear, and operators are aware of any operational issues.  Ensure the workload is properly distributed within the shift teams. Makes last minutes decisions on staffing to cover call-offs.
  • Ensure all cGMP policies and procedures are followed.
  • Ensure the plant is kept in clean condition. Hold employees accountable to ensure their respective work areas are clean during and at the end of each shift.


Desired Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; college degree a plus
  • Good communication skills (written & verbal) which are used to build a energized and cohesive team
  • Previous manufacturing experience a must
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of organizational personnel
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and execute effectively
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously under various deadlines
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point 
  • Must be willing and able to rotate 8 or 12-hour shifts (required)
  • Self motivated with the ability to learn in a face paced environment
  • Ability to give and accept constructive feedback
